{"id":1576,"date":"2013-03-18T12:48:01","date_gmt":"2013-03-18T12:48:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.egeve.com\/up\/wordpress\/2013\/03\/18\/mcconaughey-wants-to-stick-to-acting\/"},"modified":"2022-10-29T16:24:18","modified_gmt":"2022-10-29T15:24:18","slug":"mcconaughey-wants-to-stick-to-acting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.egeve.com\/en\/mcconaughey-wants-to-stick-to-acting\/","title":{"rendered":"McConaughey wants to stick to acting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>With his Hollywood career in high gear and his new film \u201cMud\u201d out soon in US theatres, Matthew McConaughey said he feels no pressing need to put acting aside for a turn behind the cameras.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>Speaking at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival on Sunday, McConaughey \u2014 a native Texan who graduated from college in Austin and now resides here \u2014 said he has a couple of ideas in the back of his head that he\u2019d like to personally direct.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>One is a children\u2019s tale he thought up before having three children of his own; the other is what he called \u201ca \u2018Spanking the Monkey\u2019 slash black comedy\u201d based on the year he spent as an exchange student in Australia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p><wp-block data-block=\"core\/more\"><\/wp-block>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>\u201cBut, to be honest, I really enjoy being An. Actor. For. Hire,\u201d the 43-year-old thespian said, emphasizing those four words in his thick Texas drawl.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>\u201cI\u2019ve just shut down my production company, shut down my music company, and I said I\u2019ve got three things that I want on my desk on the proverbial on Monday morning: that\u2019s my family, my [charitable] foundation and acting.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>\u201cAnd that has filled my days where I am able to give enough time to each of those, to really nurture all of them&#8230; They\u2019re the three things that, when the phone rings or that email comes in, I want to look at.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>Directed by Jeff Nichols and filmed in rural Arkansas, \u201cMud\u201d stars McConaughey as the title character, a rough-hewn fugitive who strikes a deal with two boys to help him evade bounty hunters and reunite with his love.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>The coming-of-age story, which also stars Reese Witherspoon, screened in competition at the Cannes film festival in 2012 before going on to Sundance this year and, on Sunday, the indie-angled SXSW event.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>\u201cThere was an innocence [to Nichols\u2019 script] and I think it comes across in the film,\u201d said McConaughey when film critic Scott Foundas of New York\u2019s Village Voice weekly asked what drew him to the project.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt was Southern in the right way. It had a very defined sense of place and time and space&#8230; I\u2019d never heard a voice like this from a character like Mud. I immediately was attracted to the dreamer aspect \u2014 he\u2019s such a wonderful dreamer \u2014 and the aristocracy of this guy\u2019s heart.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>The son a kindergarten teacher \u2014 she was in the front row at Sunday\u2019s talk \u2014 and a now-deceased gas station owner, McConaughey recalled how he decided to drop out of law school up the street at the University of Texas to study film.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>His father\u2019s advice at the time, he said, was simple: \u201cDon\u2019t half-ass it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>He also spoke of the making of the male stripper movie \u201cMagic Mike,\u201d saying had sent Steven Soderbergh \u201can eight-page email\u201d discussing the ways he thought he should play his character, an empire-building Florida strip club boss.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>The director\u2019s one-word reply: \u201cSure.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>With comedies like \u201cThe Wedding Planner\u201d and action flicks like \u201cSahara\u201d under his belt, McConaughey said he has two markedly different projects now in post-production and expected in theatres later this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>One, \u201cThe Wolf of Wall Street,\u201d directed by Martin Scorsese, a hero to McConaughey in his film-school days, sheds a spotlight on fraud and organized crime in the New York financial district.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>The other, \u201cDallas Buyers Club,\u201d finds the actor in his home state playing a drug-taking womanizing business executive in the 1980s who imports unapproved drugs for HIV-Aids victims after he learns that he too has the virus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>McConaughey, proclaimed \u201cthe sexiest man alive\u201d by <em>People<\/em> magazine in 2005, lost nearly 20 kilograms to get into his gaunt mustachioed character.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With his Hollywood career in high gear and his new film \u201cMud\u201d out soon in&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1575,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[44,56],"tags":[1905,1903,1904,66,1467],"class_list":["post-1576","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-celebrity","category-news","tag-acting","tag-mcconaughey","tag-stick","tag-to","tag-wants"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.egeve.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1576","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.egeve.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.egeve.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.egeve.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.egeve.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1576"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.egeve.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1576\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3297,"href":"https:\/\/www.egeve.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1576\/revisions\/3297"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.egeve.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1575"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.egeve.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1576"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.egeve.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1576"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.egeve.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1576"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
