The mercury is expected to soar into the 80s midday, when nominees parade inside the Nokia Theatre. Add hundreds of spotlights and a dose of nerves, and maintaining a cool, camera-ready appearance can be a challenge. But the stars have strategies.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>Emmy-winning animator Kevin Shinick, for example, has a powerful plan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>\u201cBattery-operated tux,\u201d he said. \u201cI have little mini fans all throughout. So you know, that was extra, I couldn\u2019t afford all that!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>Actress Lake Bell suggests minimising movement.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p><wp-block data-block=\"core\/more\"><\/wp-block>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>\u201cIf you do not move that much, you will not sweat. So I am trying to exercise restraint,\u201d she said at last week\u2019s Creative Arts Emmy celebration, where temperatures topped 100 degrees. \u201cBut the dress is helping me because it\u2019s very serre, as we say in French, very narrow.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong><em>Dancing With the Stars<\/em> choreographers Travis Wall and Nick Lazzarini agreed with the no-movement policy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>Plus \u201cpit pads\u201d, Lazzarini said, and chilled beverages in the car on the way to the ceremony.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>Stylists offer some more practical solutions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>Opt for light fabrics and minimal undergarments, suggests celebrity stylist and costume designer Tanya Gill. That means choosing looks that allow for a Spanx-free approach: \u201cIf you can avoid all those undergarments that a lot of people tend to rely on for these events \u2014 maybe a little Pilates, a little juice the week before \u2014 you\u2019ll feel so much more comfortable not to have all that on.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>A spray tan can help, too. \u201cIf they can spare a couple of hours and get a spray-on tan, they\u2019ll feel amazing,\u201d she said. \u201cIt also makes you feel slimmer.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>Men should consider light fabrics as well \u2014 and mind the lining of their tuxedos. \u201cAvoid anything polyester, even the lining,\u201d Gill said. \u201cCotton, fabulous. Linen, fantastic.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>When it comes to hair, ladies should skip the side-swept ponytails and half-up\/half-down \u2018dos popular in seasons past, says celebrity stylist and global creative director for Alterna Professional Haircare Michael Shaun Corby. \u201cThis season it\u2019s all about the beehive, topknots and super-sleek ponies,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat I like about these styles is they keep your hair off the neck, keep you cool and keep you right on trend.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>Men should avoid the \u201cshaggy, hipster look\u201d in the heat, says Corby, because \u201cwhen you start to sweat, the ends will start to curl, and that will be a red-carpet miss.\u201d He suggests opting for shorter cuts \u2014 and don&#8217;t forget the sunscreen. For guys who must rock longer styles, \u201ctry putting dry shampoo close to the scalp, because that will dry up excess oil and keep you from looking shiny on those HD-close-ups,\u201d Corby said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>Since many of the nominees are actors, there\u2019s always the option of acting cool. At the Creative Arts ceremony, Brenda Strong worked her skills to beat the heat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<p><strong>\u201cI\u2019m not beating anything. It\u2019s beating me, very slowly,\u201d she said. \u201cI look cool. Thank you. It\u2019s an act, it\u2019s all an act.
